A truly original expounder of eccentric and wonderful music, Hyperpotamus creates layered soundscapes using only a loop station, four microphones and his voice. Possessor of a beautiful vibrato reminiscent of Rufus Wainwright and a palette of vocal sounds approaching that of Mike Patton, watching Hyperpotamus live was an experience like no other. From whispering to yodelling, and beat-boxing to crooning, every nuance of his voice was explored right in front of us. Clearly a man with few inhibitions, he would dance along to his vocal loops in a rather unique fashion, and you couldn?t help but smile as you witnessed the spectacle that is Hyperpotamus. DHNH are a collection of songs, and also a band (soon to be seen on tour with A Hawk and A Hacksaw), whose epic scope marries transatlantic cosmic roots music with a deeply poetic English folk soul. Conceived in painstaking fashion over five years by Lancaster-based singer/songwriter/ornithologist Haywood as a way of documenting his bird-and-people-watching travels around rural Scotland, the New Hawks as songs are captured on a sprawling, hugely ambitious 32-track album: a vast modern-day Joycean folk/rock cartography with Haywood as your charismatic navigator poet. The British Isles finally have their own Lambchop.
